Bank Checks

A “bank” check is often referred to as Teller Check, Official Check, or Cashier’s Check. Bank checks are negotiable items that can only be purchased with available funds from a person’s account or cash. Currently, Pacific Trust only offers Official Checks and Cashier’s Checks to its customers.

Bank checks are different from the checks customers write from their own account because they are purchased with “guaranteed” funds; this makes a bank check comparable to cash. Because of this cash-like quality, it is against the law to “wrongfully refuse” to pay a bank check, and a purchaser of a bank check may not stop a bank check from being paid. Therefore, a bank check can only be replaced if the original check has been lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Cashier's Checks are a special category of bank check for which a replacement check can only be issued to the payee under special circumstances and following the posting of a bond.

At this time, Pacific Trust Bank charges $2.00 for an Official Check (this fee may be waived if the customer has a Super or High Yield Checking account). All customers are charged $5.00 for each Cashier’s Check, unless an exception to this fee under special circumstances is granted by a Bank Officer.

Travelers Cheques

Travelers Cheques are considered the “safe” currency because if they are lost or stolen, they can be replaced quickly and easily, almost anywhere in the world, usually within 24 hours. Pacific Trust Bank sells American Express Travelers Cheques issued in U.S. dollars as well as Cheques for Two and Gift Cheques.

Cheques do not expire and unused Travelers Cheques can be used for a future trip, or like cash at locations in your area. Currently, we do not charge our customers for standard Traveler’s Cheques.

Cheques for Two are perfect for traveling couples and families because they offer all the convenience of regular Travelers Cheques, but with a unique dual signature feature that allows either of you to purchase them or use them. The fee for this variety of cheque is 1/2% of the total purchase amount or $.50 per $100.00.

Gift Cheques are similar to store certificates or gift certificates except that they allow the payee to use the funds anywhere. Gift Cheques are available in a variety of denominations. The fee for Gift Cheques is $1.25 per cheque.

Money Orders

A Money Order is one type of negotiable item that Pacific Trust sells at each of our full-service branch locations. At this time, we only issue American Express money orders, and these can only be issued up to $1,000 per money order. In general, the fee for a single money order is $2.00 although this fee will be waived if you have a Super Checking account.

Bank customers are not limited to how many money orders they can purchase at one time, as long as EACH money order does not exceed $1,000. In contrast to this, non-customers are only allowed to purchase up to $1,000 in money orders per day.
